The local community will get a temporary boost in work force when Lycoming College’s Class of 2012 freshmen participate in a variety of community service projects during the 2008 fall semester, which begins Aug. 25. The projects, which range from serving as ushers at the Little League World Series Championship to providing labor for Habitat for Humanity, will begin this month and end in November.

Last year, the freshmen from Lycoming’s Class of 2011 volunteered more than 3,000 hours of their time to the community service projects.

“Students at Lycoming College are encouraged to develop and strengthen virtues and traits of character that enable, ennoble and emancipate the human spirit,” said Regina Collins, Lycoming’s assistant dean of freshmen and organizer of the program. “Through the community service projects, it is our hope that the students will heighten awareness of themselves, their classmates and the community of Williamsport as they also enhance their perspective of civic responsibility.”

This year’s projects include clearing paths at the Loyalsock Trail; serving as ushers at the Little League World Series Championship; working on various building projects for Habitat for Humanity; assisting with Divine Providence Hospital’s Autumn Fest; helping with the Red Cross of Lycoming County’s “Susquehanna 500” road race; assisting with the United Way Day of Caring; working as escorts for the athletes who participate in the Hand in Hand Festival which supports the Special Olympics; and volunteering to help the College’s chapter of Habitat for Humanity’s 5K fun race to raise funds for local building projects.
