Lycoming College requires all students using the Apple operating system to use the ClamXav antivirus product as the antivirus software for all Mac-based computers in order to obtain access to the campus network. ClamXav is a free download from ClamXav’s website.
ClamXAV provides real-time protection for your Mac guarding against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.
The link to download the software is: www.clamxav.com
You must remove any different antivirus software prior to installing ClamXav. When you have two antiviruses installed on a single machine they are going to do one of two things – either they will block each other because they will use or scan the same process at the same time or they will try to eliminate each other, since the antivirus software has some of the same signatures of the viruses that you are trying to fight. AV software needs these signatures to be able to recognize the bad software on a computer. When you are installing a piece of antivirus software on your computer, make sure that it is the only one. If not then your system might become inoperable and, ultimately infected.
PC users: Microsoft Security Essentials
