Modern Language Studies Learning Goals
Students who major in a modern language can expect to achieve the following learning goals:
- Speak the language studied in a way intelligible to native speakers, including the ability to converse comfortably on general topics
- Demonstrate familiarity with Francophone, German, or Hispanic literatures and cultures
- Critical thinking skills or formulate and defend a thesis in a written or oral format
- Mastery of the basic research skills necessary to write a paper or give a research presentation in the language studied
- Demonstrate proficiency in written communication in the language studied
- Students seeking certification to teach the language studied should have a basic knowledge of second language acquisition
