Modern Language Studies Learning Goals

Students who major in a modern language can expect to achieve the following learning goals:

Speak the language studied in a way intelligible to native speakers, including the ability to converse comfortably on general topics
Demonstrate familiarity with Francophone, German, or Hispanic literatures and cultures
Critical thinking skills or formulate and defend a thesis in a written or oral format
Mastery of the basic research skills necessary to write a paper or give a research presentation in the language studied
Demonstrate proficiency in written communication in the language studied
Students seeking certification to teach the language studied should have a basic knowledge of second language acquisition
