Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on November 24, 1945. Married Carolyn Lee Spinks on September 26, 1969 and has 3 children.

University of Minnesota; BA 1966; majors in astronomy and mathematics, minor in geology.
Churchill College, Cambridge University, UK; one year of graduate research in radio astronomy, 1966-67 academic year.
University of Chicago and Yerkes Observatory; MS 1970, PhD 1974 in astronomy and astrophysics.
