Becky Leid

Spanish Major

Hi!

My name is Becky Leid and I am majoring in Spanish. While Williamsport is my hometown most of the year, I am from Denver, Pennsylvania, which is about two hours from Lycoming and in the heart of "Amish Country."

Several years ago I chose Lycoming College because it had everything I was looking for in a school. It offered small classes, friendly professors, and a diverse student body. It's a beautiful campus with a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Most of the profs are great, but Dr. Buedel is one of my favorites. She really cares about students and does all she can to make sure we succeed. Upon her encouragement and assistance I will be studying in Spain this summer. I will be spending one month along the southern coast in Salamanca and another month in Alicante (not far from Portugal). Besides taking classes and living with host families, I plan to take numerous weekend trips to local villages, towns, and cities. I'm very excited!

In addition to academics, I believe it is important to get involved outside of the classroom. For me that includes playing varsity basketball, being active in the Spanish Club, and serving as a tour guide for the Admissions Office.

My fondest memories of Lycoming (thus far) are the last weeks of spring semester. Even though it is somewhat stressful, late April brings out the warm afternoon sun and everyone, and I mean everyone, is out on the quad studying and having fun. Fraternities set up the barbeque grills and host horseshoe tournaments while others are playing everything from Frisbee to baseball, to football, to lacrosse. Music is amped up from the dorm windows and often a Lyco club band will perform for the appreciative audience. My friends and I usually throw out a blanket and work on our tans. At that moment I feel very connected to my Lyco family and there is no place I''d rather be.

With two years down and two to go, I hope to gain more travel experience and continue working as a Spanish tutor. Lycoming is a wonderful place. Come experience it for yourself...and maybe when you visit, I'll be giving the tour of campus!
