WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Lycoming College donated more than 350 items to the 2010 Lycoming County Toys for Tots campaign. For the 11th consecutive year, the College’s Office of Admissions and Financial Aid coordinated the event with the support of faculty, staff and students.

Barb Carlin, event coordinator and a member of the admissions staff, says this year’s total surpassed last year’s by more than 50 toys.

All of the toys from the College have been sent to the local Salvation Army, which will distribute them to more than 1,000 needy children in the Williamsport area.

Now in its 63nd year, Toys for Tots is a program of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and collects new, unwrapped toys in October, November and December each year, according to the Toys for Tots Web site.
Lycoming to hold Science Saturday Oct. 2

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Lycoming College will host its annual Science Saturday Open House on Oct. 2, at 9:30 a.m. The program offers high school juniors and seniors an inside look at the College’s astronomy, biology, chemistry and physics departments.

“Science Saturday is a great way for students interested in collegiate science majors to meet with students already in the programs,” said Dr. David Fisher, professor of astronomy and physics. “At a small liberal arts institution, students work along-side faculty members with instruction that is individualized as much as possible. Laboratory work counts heavily toward undergraduate preparation for their careers or graduate school studies.”

Attendees may choose three sessions from the six offered. They include: Choosing a Health Profession; Clean Air, Clean Water and the Environment; Biology...A World of Possibilities; Chemistry...The Central Science; Astronomy and Physics...The Final Frontier; and The Out of Classroom Experience.

“We have a panel of students who talk about their summer internship experiences,” says Dr. Michelle Briggs, assistant professor of biology. “This is a great chance for high school students to see what summer research opportunities we have at Lycoming, and how some students stretch beyond Lycoming to find exciting research projects across the globe.”

Tours of the campus and lunch will also be provided for the attendees. For more information or to register for Science Saturday, please contact the Office of Admissions at 1.800.345.3920 x4026 or visit www.lycoming.edu/admissions.

Lycoming ranked in top tier by U.S. News and World Report; 11th nationally for graduation rate

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Lycoming College has been recognized as a Tier 1 institution by U.S. News & World Report in its 2011 edition of “America’s Best Colleges.” According to U.S. News, the nation’s 266 liberal arts colleges focus almost exclusively on undergraduate education and award at least 50 percent of their degrees in the arts and sciences. Bucknell, Dickinson, Gettysburg and Swarthmore are among other Pennsylvania institutions in the Tier 1 group.

In addition, Lycoming is ranked 11th in the nation among liberal arts and science institutions in graduation rate when comparing actual graduation rate with the predicted rate. While the vast majority of Lycoming’s students graduate in four years, data from the U.S. Department of Education also confirms Lycoming’s six-year graduation rate of 74 percent to be very strong when compared to other schools. Nationally, the average six-year graduation rate at all private non-profit colleges and universities is 54 percent while Pennsylvania’s privates average 65 percent. The average six-year graduation rate reported for all public universities in Pennsylvania is 53 percent.

“Lycoming’s high graduation rate is a testament to the good work of the faculty and staff members who see that our students get the attention and resources they need to succeed in the classroom,” said James Spencer, Lycoming’s vice president for admissions and financial aid. “And, it helps that Lycoming attracts committed, hard-working students.”

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Lycoming College has been named by Forbes.com as one of "America''s Best Colleges" for 2010. Lycoming is among a select group of 610 schools in the rankings.

According to Forbes.com, "Our list of more than 600 undergraduate institutions is based on the quality of the education they provide, the experiences of the students and how much they achieve."

Forbes reviews just nine percent of the 6,600 accredited postsecondary institutions in the U.S. The survey results were compiled by Forbes and the Center for College Affordability and Productivity. The CCAP used data from a variety of sources, including student evaluations, number of prominent alumni, average amount of student debt after graduation, percentage of students graduating in four years and the number of students or faculty who have won nationally competitive awards.

Lycoming recognized by Princeton Review as one of the "Best Northeastern Colleges"

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Lycoming College has been recognized as one of the best institutions of higher learning in the Northeast according to The Princeton Review. The education services company selected Lycoming as one of 218 institutions it profiles in its "Best in the Northeast" section on its web site feature 2011 Best Colleges by Region that was recently posted on www.PrincetonReview.com. It also profiles the College in its book, "The Best Northeastern Colleges: 2011 Edition."

"There are more great schools in the Northeast than in any part of the country," said James Spencer, vice president of admissions and financial aid at Lycoming. "It's flattering that Lycoming is listed alongside such schools as Bucknell, Dickinson, Lafayette and Lehigh."

The 218 colleges The Princeton Review chose for its "Best in the Northeast" web site designations and "The Best Northeastern Colleges" book are located in 11 states: Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont, and the District of Columbia. A total of 623 colleges were named "regional best(s)," which represent about 25 percent of the nation's 2,500 four-year colleges.

"We chose Lycoming and the other terrific schools we recommend as our ''regional best'' colleges primarily for their excellent academic programs," says Robert Franek, Princeton Review's vice president for publishing. "From several hundred schools in each region, we winnowed our list based on institutional data we collected directly from the schools, our visits to schools over the years, and the opinions of our staff, plus college counselors and advisors whose recommendations we invite. We also take into account what students at the schools reported to us about their campus experiences at them on our 80-question student survey for this project."

The Princeton Review survey for this project asks students to rate their own schools on several issues - from the accessibility of their professors to quality of the campus food - and answer questions about themselves, their fellow students and their campus life.

The Princeton Review, headquartered in Framingham, Mass., with editorial offices in New York City and test preparation locations across the country and abroad, is not affiliated with Princeton University and it is not a magazine.
