Philosophy Statement

The collegiate experience at Lycoming College is a time for students to learn and develop in all areas of their lives. Whereas the academic component of this experience stimulates intellectual growth, the social, recreational, and cultural aspects of life are developed through the efforts of the Office of Student Programs and Leadership Development. We choose to support these areas of learning primarily because students who participate in out of the classroom activities are far more likely to succeed academically (Austin, 1984).

The social component is enhanced in several ways. Through programs, students are provided opportunities to interact one on one to create interpersonal relationships. Student organizations further enhance interpersonal skills while empowering students to work on important citizenship and community oriented issues. Leadership development training helps students understand the connection between individual and community relationships building leaders and citizens for society.

The recreational component of Student Programs and Leadership Development stimulates personal growth in areas that are crucial to health and wellness. Whether laughing at a movie or comedian, dancing at a function, canoeing on a river, skiing or hiking in the woods, or participating in a competition, students are provided many avenues for recreational development.

Cultural awareness is stimulated by programs that celebrate, educate, and embrace the diversity of the world. Additionally, student organizational involvement and leadership development training teach valuable lessons of understanding people who are different from oneself. These explorations help prepare student for the issues facing the global community.

The Office of Student Programs and Leadership Development cannot take sole credit for the out of the classroom development of our students. That is why the staff works closely with other offices and the faculty to provide optimal experiences that support the academic role of the College. When these collaborations are designed and presented effectively, all students are afforded the full benefit of a truly liberal arts education.
