Local residents formed a congregation when ore ran out and the previously existing area churches ceased to function.  They met in the school house and approached the Mifflintown churches for preaching on a regular basis.  After being refused by the Presbyterians and Lutherans, the congregation succeeded in 1884 in securing the services of the Methodist minister, the Rev. Martin L. Smith.  In 1909 a wing of the ell-shaped Arch Rock school was moved across the road to a plot donated by C.C. Shellenberger.  This became the congregation’s first and present church building.
