Brief History:
Lakeville was originally known as Hemlock
Hollow, and then Purdytown. The name Lakeville was given to the post
office and the community in 1907. The
original portion of the current building was erected by the Baptists in 1845
and purchased by the Methodists a few years later. Three major additions have brought the
building to its present form. A new
entry way with a bell tower was completed in 1921. In 1961 the room to west, with a basement,
was added. The fellowship wing was
completed in 1987.

23. Prompton Community United Methodist Church

Directions: From US 6 in Prompton, access Church Street at either end of the borough. Church Street is the old US 6, and it runs parallel to and south of the present US 6. It may be entered at the Y at the west end of town or via Prompton Road at the east end of town.

crosses the Lackawaxen River at the south end of
town), which becomes Daniels Road and the Fox Hill Road. The church is about 6 miles from Honesdale.
Historic Conference: Wyoming Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church
Brief History: This is the main appointment on what was
called the Oregon charge until it was re-named Carley
Brook charge in 1899. At one time there
were four church buildings on the charge: Torrey (1849), Smith Hill (1852), Rileyville (1871), Carley Brook
(1886), Girdland (1894). The Smith Hill class was organized in 1841
and erected their first church building on land owned by a Mr. Lovelace in
1852. That property was deeded to the
class in 1855. A new church building,
the present structure was built in 1926, the cornerstone being laid on July 4
and the dedication taking place on September 26. The old church building was sold and removed,
the space being filled in to form the present parking lot.
