With approval from the Board of Trustees at their fall meeting, Lycoming College will reinstate two varsity athletic programs — baseball and field hockey — during the 2022-23 academic year.

Lycoming, which currently sponsors the fewest number of varsity sports of any member of the Middle Atlantic Conference, began considering the expansion of opportunities for intercollegiate competition in 2018. Baseball and field hockey were recommended as additions because of interest from both current and prospective students, as well as the history of both programs at the College. Lycoming will begin national searches for head coaches in early 2021 with the expectation that both teams will be ready for varsity action in 2022-23.

The two sports are the first to be added to Lycoming’s athletic offerings since men’s and women’s lacrosse were introduced in 1997. The College will now offer a total of 19 varsity sports. The last time baseball was played at the College was in 1972, and the last time field hockey was played was in 1992.

For additional information about the reinstatement of baseball and field hockey, join in a virtual press conference via Zoom on Thursday, December 17, at 1 p.m. at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88950543620.
