“It’s really a shame that more poets don’t see the connection between their art and music,” says Ira Sadoff in the featured interview for the Winter 2021 issue of Brilliant Corners. “As you know, I went to school as much through music as I did through literature.”
As usual, the conversation was conducted by the journal’s founding editor, Sascha Feinstein, Ph.D., Professor and Chair of English at Lycoming College. “In addition to being a tremendous, multi-faceted writer,” Feinstein said, “Ira Sadoff knows a remarkable amount about jazz. The interview was pure pleasure.”
In addition to Sadoff’s eight collections of poetry, he is the author of History Matters: Contemporary Poetry on the Margins of American Culture and An Ira Sadoff Reader. His honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Creative Arts Fellowship from the NEA, and the Lyric Poetry and Bogin Prizes from the Poetry Society of America.
The issue also features poetry by several other writers, including Sandra McPherson, Robert Gibb, and Diane Thiel, all of whom have published at least ten books. The striking cover photo of singer Jazzmeia Horn was taken by Steven Sussman, who recently received the Jazz Journalists Association’s Lona Foote-Bob Parent Award for Career Achievement in Photography.
Brilliant Corners is a biannual journal that highlights an exceptional collection of literature and art pertaining to jazz. Founded in 1996, the journal bears strong ties to Lycoming College, with contributors such as Feinstein, who serves as the managing editor, and Gary R. Hafer, Ph.D., John P. Graham Teaching Professor of English at Lycoming College, who serves as the production design editor. The publication is funded in part by the College, the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts, and private endowments.
