As part of Governor Shapiro’s “It’s On Us PA” program, Lycoming College was awarded a grant in the amount of $40,000 – the highest amount possible for an individual institution – for preventive awareness of sexual, dating and domestic violence, and stalking; to provide support to students who have been affected; and to remove barriors that prevent students from reporting. This is the third It’s On Us grant awarded to the College.
Launched in January 2016, It’s On Us PA is the nation’s first statewide campaign that invites leaders in education, as well as all Pennsylvanians, to help end sexual violence. The campaign’s mission aligns closely with Lycoming College’s own goals of supporting its inclusive campus community by ending sexual assault, and using educational empowerment to effect positive change on campus culture.
The grant will enable Lycoming to build on its already strong track record of educating and promoting awareness of sexual violence. With the funds, the College will bring nationally-known topical speakers to campus, provide support to students who have been affected by sexual violence through a group of peer advocates, remove or reduce barriers that prevent students from reporting sexual violence, and raise awareness of reporting options on campus. In addition, Lycoming will continue strengthening an already-robust working relationship with the YWCA Northcentral PA to offer programming on the impacts of victimization.
“I’m proud of the work we’ve done on our campus to ensure that every student can learn without interruption."
“I’m proud of the work we’ve done on our campus to ensure that every student can learn without interruption. Our community is committed to campus safety and we will continue to educate and work to prevent sexual assault,” said Kate Hummel, associate dean of students at Lycoming College. “I’m grateful to Gov. Shapiro for awarding this grant to Lycoming College in the fight to change campus culture.”
“The It’s On Us PA campaign cultivates change and provides colleges, universities, and postsecondary career and trade schools with the support and resources necessary to protect learning environments and ensure they are free from sexual assault, harassment, and violence,” said Secretary of Education Dr. Khalid N. Mumin. “All Pennsylvanians deserve a safe learning environment. By participating in the It’s On Us PA grant program, higher education institutions are making their campus communities safer and more welcoming for the students who call them home.”
