A Lycoming College Esports team dominated the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Super Smash Bros. Ultimate competition to win the championship in April. A team of six students completed the spring ’24 season undefeated, moving on to win two rounds of playoffs, a semifinal, and a protracted final round of competition lasting four hours to be crowned the victor!
Founded in 2020, the Lycoming College Esports Club competes from the Esports arena, outfitted with gaming PCs, console setups, a projector for video reviews, and space to stream matches. The club competes in League of Legends, Madden, NBA2K, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Valorant, and more, while also offering non-competitive play with single-player and team-based options that fit every gamer’s playing style and preferences.
The reigning Super Smash Bros. Ultimate team consisted of:
- Drew Hines ’26 (Allentown, Pa.), history major and astronomy minor, and team captain
- Remley Nance ’26 (Abingdon, Md.), biology major and criminal justice minor
- Charles Karalfa ’26 (Johnstown, Pa.), criminal justice major and psychology minor
- Jahiel Boatswain ’27 (Newark, N.J.), undeclared major
- Chayton Wesneski ’25 (Canton, Pa.), creative writing major and theatre minor, and team substitute
- Brandon Weyandt ’26 (Windber, Pa.), political science major and economics minor, and team substitute
Conner Penz ’26, astronomy and archaeology double major from Medford, N.J., and president of the Esports Club at Lycoming College, said, “Between competitive and casual players, the club currently has around 50 members, and is always open to expanding that number. It’s a fun, supportive group and we encourage all students to join, including first-year students!”
