Institution hailed for outstanding efforts to increase nonpartisan student voter participation in the 2024 election.
Lycoming College has been recognized by the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge as a 2024 ALL IN Most Engaged Campuses for College Student Voting for outstanding efforts to increase nonpartisan student voter participation. Lycoming joins a group of 471 colleges and universities recognized by ALL IN for completing four core actions:
Led by Lycoming instructor Angela Kurtz, Ph.D., students enrolled in a course entitled “Civic Engagement” undertook a number of initiatives to encourage voter participation among their classmates this election cycle.
- A National Voter Registration Day Drive resulted in 53 new Pennsylvania voter registrations.
- Weekly voter registration tables encouraged registration up until the Oct. 21 deadline registered approximately 85 students total to vote in Pennsylvania this election cycle.
- Flyer drops in the dorms included polling information specific to Lycoming students.
- An Election Day event outdoors encouraged students to vote and to celebrate with free food and stickers after they cast their ballots.
“As a liberal arts and sciences campus, Lycoming College places a high value on the democratic process,” said Kurtz. “This fall we facilitated a high on-campus voter turnout through a number of student designed and driven activities that empowered our college community to engage in civil public discourse, raising their interest in and appreciation for the importance of voting.”
“The All In Voter Challenge played a key role in boosting my civic and social engagement on campus. It gave me the opportunity to meet new students and have meaningful conversations with peers I had never interacted with before,” said Tiaura Robinson, a Lycoming College senior psychology major and sociology minor from Philadelphia. “I had never fully considered the many different situations that call for civic engagement until this semester. There are countless ways to make a positive impact, and this course has truly broadened my perspective. Through the lessons I've learned, I've developed a deep interest in addressing the inequalities within the criminal justice system. As I prepare to graduate this upcoming spring, I am committed to dedicating my spare time to a nonprofit organization that aligns with my values and works toward the causes I am passionate about.”
“The research is clear: colleges and universities that make intentional efforts to increase nonpartisan democratic engagement have higher campus voter registration and voter turnout rates. This year we saw more colleges than ever before step up their efforts to ensure that their students were registered and ready to make their voices heard at the ballot box,” said Jennifer Domagal-Goldman, executive director of the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge. “These Most Engaged Campuses are setting the standard for nonpartisan civic engagement work for colleges and universities across the country.”
