Lycoming College released the second volume of its Mid-Atlantic Humanities Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Research (MHR), featuring fifteen essays from undergraduate students from the mid-Atlantic region, including three from Lycoming College. The annual publication is available in both print and on the Lycoming website.
Published under the auspices of the Humanities Research Center (HRC) at Lycoming College, MHR celebrates excellence in undergraduate research in humanities and related disciplines: history, literature, philosophy, art history, modern & classical languages, religious studies, interdisciplinary humanistic studies, digital humanities, and social sciences with humanistic emphasis. The publication features the selected proceedings of the Lycoming Undergraduate Humanities Research Conference.
"Together, the essays speak to the complex and beautiful cultural history of humanity, and they remind us of the vibrant work being done in college classrooms to understand our past, ourselves, and our world."
“In addition to sharing student research, the journal also provides an opportunity for Lycoming students to enter the professional world of editing and publishing,” said Andrew Leiter, Ph.D., professor of English, director of the HRC, and journal editor. “This year’s volume features fifteen essays in a variety of fields, including history, literature, gender studies, popular culture, modern language studies, ethics and healthcare, Islamic studies, artificial intelligence, and more. Together, the essays speak to the complex and beautiful cultural history of humanity, and they remind us of the vibrant work being done in college classrooms to understand our past, ourselves, and our world.”
“The Humanities Research Center at Lycoming College launched the Mid-Atlantic Humanities Review as a chance for Lycoming students and other undergraduate students around the region to share their research with a broad audience in a professional venue,” Leiter said. “Our editorial board of four students did an amazing job of selecting, editing, and preparing the essays for publication. Hopefully, this will be a valuable experience for them as they proceed to the workforce and graduate school.”
“Being able to edit research essays that had such a wide breadth of topics was a real treat,” said Mackenzie Holmes, a history and English double major at Lycoming College who worked as managing editor for the MHR, “It allowed me to learn so much outside of my primary field of study. It is important that information, educational resources, and undergraduate research is more widely available and being able to contribute to that in any way, no matter how small, is a large honor.”
