Lycoming College today announced a partnership that will enable students to pursue a nursing degree through an accelerated program with DeSales University. The program affiliation provides Lycoming students the opportunity to graduate with a Bachelor of Science (BS) or a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree from Lycoming College, before pursuing an Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) from DeSales.

Multiple majors at Lycoming College can serve as a pathway to the DeSales 15-month degree program, with biology, biochemistry, and chemistry fulfilling many of the prerequisites.

“Lycoming College’s natural science programs prepare students for entry to nursing school with hands-on experiences, such as faculty-led research, internships, and job shadowing opportunities with nationally recognized health systems.”

The Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program (ABSN) at DeSales touts a long history of delivering a high quality nursing education with an average National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) first-time pass rate of 96.67 percent.

DeSales will admit up to five Lycoming College students every year. To qualify, students must have earned a bachelor’s degree from Lycoming with a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 or higher. Admission requirements to DeSales can be fulfilled by the Lycoming College Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, Medical Microbiology, Organic Chemistry, Statistics, and Lifespan Development courses. More information on the program can be found at https://www.lycoming.edu/nursing/.

“DeSales has a long tradition of providing high quality nursing programs to our students. Partnering with Lycoming to add prepared students to the ABSN program will help secure much needed qualified nursing professionals to the healthcare system. We are looking forward to this opportunity for collaboration between our institutions,” said Terese Wignot, Ph.D., provost of DeSales University.

“This new partnership with DeSales University provides our students with the wonderful opportunity to graduate from Lycoming with a degree from our liberal arts and sciences college, and a second degree from an accredited, highly sought nursing school,” said Sandra Kingery, Ph.D., provost and dean of the faculty at Lycoming College. “This nursing program affiliation will broaden career options for students, preparing them for jobs as nurses, as well as for other career opportunities that await them in the future.”

“Lycoming College’s natural science programs prepare students for entry to nursing school with hands-on experiences, such as faculty-led research, internships, and job shadowing opportunities with nationally recognized health systems,” said Jeff Newman, Ph.D., professor of biology at Lycoming College. “In addition, students can find support through pre-health society programming, field trips, and guest speakers, as well as through close faculty mentorship and career advising that is emblematic of the liberal arts and sciences education provided to all students at Lycoming.”

Lycoming students must indicate their interest in the ABSN program by the fall of their sophomore year. ABSN students will be assigned junior-level status when they begin their studies at DeSales for financial aid purposes.

All of Lycoming College’s cooperative programs have a liberal arts emphasis that requires critical thought, ensuring that talented, diligent students will be ready for additional academic pursuits. With faculty dedicated exclusively to the education of undergraduate students, an abundance of hands-on opportunities, internships with local healthcare systems, and close mentorship through Lycoming’s Health Professions Advisory Committee, students are well-positioned to succeed at DeSales and in the nursing field.
