In recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness month, Lycoming College will screen HBO’s Emmy award-winning documentary film “I Am Evidence” on Tuesday, April 1, at 5 p.m., in the Trogner Presentation Room in Krapf Gateway Center. The event is free and the public are welcome to attend.

Directed by Trish Adlesic and Geeta Gandbhir, “I Am Evidence” exposes the alarming number of untested rape kits in the United States through a character–driven narrative, bringing much needed attention to the disturbing pattern of how the criminal justice system has historically treated sexual assault survivors. The film explores the issue through survivors’ experiences as they trace the fates of their kits and reengage in the criminal justice process. “I Am Evidence” illuminates how the system has impeded justice while highlighting those who are leading the charge to work through the backlog.

The film screening will be followed by a panel discussion about the rape kit backlog featuring experts from several local organizations, including:

  • YWCA NorthCentral PA
  • UPMC SANE Examiner Program
  • Pennsylvania State Police Forensic Services
  • Williamsport Bureau of Police

“This program will provide a platform for education and awareness while fostering meaningful discussions on a pressing issue,” said Samantha Mahaffey, project director, OVW grant. “The Lycoming College campus will continue to work to bring awareness to these important issues with observances and other events throughout the month of April.”
