The Paul A. MacKenzie Discovery Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded annually to a German major who will study abroad in Germany or a German-speaking country. Dr. Paul A. MacKenzie joined the faculty at Lycoming College in 1970 as a member of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures. He served as a leader in the department and among the faculty for 33 years, until his untimely death in 2003. Dr. MacKenzie received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Boston University, earning an A.B., A.M. and Ph.D. During his tenure at Lycoming, Paul became well known for his appreciation of anecdotes and profound skill at narrating them. He could relate a humorous story, little-known fact or overlooked connection to almost any given situation. Well-read and well-traveled, Paul's genuine curiosity and love for the world-ephemeral and eternal-instilled in his students, colleagues, friends and family a thirst to discover and explore beyond the beaten path. It is in his honor that The Paul A. MacKenzie Discovery Scholarship was created.
At one of the past Phi Kappa Phi banquets, Dr. Paul A. MacKenzie was honored. Please use the links below to read the tributes delivered by Prof. Janet M. Hurlbert and Dr. Barbara F. Buedel.
