How to Become a Tutor
Each semester, Tutoring Services employs 100+ Lycoming students. We have multiple categories of employment, and some students serve in several capacities, depending on their strengths and areas of study. The various student positions are as follows:
- Writing Center tutor – works regular hours each week
- Math Center tutor – works regular hours each week
- Subject tutor – meets with students mostly one-on-one by appointment as needed
- Academic success peer mentor – meets with students one-on-one by appointment as needed
- Study group facilitator (SGF) – holds regular walk-in sessions with groups of students
These positions give students not only paid job experience, but also the opportunity to review subject matter of interest and to develop a range of professional skills in interpersonal communication, intercultural communication, instruction, and leadership.
Prospective student employees should be in good academic standing, having earned at least one full-time semester’s worth of college credits. Tutoring positions require endorsement by a faculty member from the relevant subject or skill area.
